Employing Interactive Three Dimensional Computer Graphics for the Visualization of Ternary Diagrams

Interdisciplinary problem solving is a practice employed by both professional engineers and engineering educators. Finding and utilizing new ways to present complex, intangible ideas is a trend that has changed the ways in which people work and learn. The use of computer graphics has become the primary tool for presenting and representing complex problems and concepts, and the audience for representational graphics expands across disciplinary and specialization boundaries.

In this paper, the use of computer graphics as a tool to assist learning is examined through the initial development of an actual application. Ternary phase diagrams of various types are represented utilizing three-dimensional computer generated images within an interactive application. The purpose is to enable undergraduate materials science students to better understand these complex systems and structures, and to visualize and evaluate the generated results through experimental learning.

This paper also presents a framework for developing the representational graphics for the ternary diagrams in reference to achieving accurate data and facilitating optimal student learning, particularly in the context of preparing engineering students for multidisciplinary practice. Consideration is also given to the principles of usability design and heuristics in as it relates to student learning.

Interactive viewing technologies like Adobe Acrobat 3D, Shockwave and X3D turn viewers into users and allow them to see multiple dimensions and levels by combining both static and dynamic capabilities within a single format. How can we effectively employ these sophisticated platforms to better visualize and represent complex concepts?
